DIE MAUER: THE UMBRELLAS OF FREEDOM

YEAR: 2009
Die Mauer: the umbrellas of freedom
Work of installation art – Berlin

In 2009, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Giampaolo Talani was the only foreign artist to be asked by the Berlin Parliament to exhibit at the opening ceremony. He then presented his installation “Die Mauer – Gli ombrelli della libertà’” (Die Mauer: The Umbrellas of Freedom). Following the anthological exhibition “Rosa dei Venti” (Rose of the Winds) set in Florence, at Piazza della Signoria, in 2008, umbrellas once again floated over what was left of the Berlin wall.

At a time when too often people build walls of separation instead of bridges of understanding, these umbrellas poetically symbolise the overpowering need for redemption and freedom
